What is Nasonex?

Nasonex 24HR Allergy is an unscented nasal spray that can be used daily to relieve symptoms caused by hay fever as well as indoor, outdoor, seasonal, and year-round allergies.

What symptoms can Nasonex products relieve?

Allergy symptoms that can be relieved by Nasonex products include nasal congestion, runny nose, sneezing, and itchy nose.

How does Nasonex work?

Allergens cause the body to secrete certain chemicals, including histamine, eicosanoids, leukotrienes, and cytokines.[i] The active ingredient of Nasonex 24HR Allergy is mometasone furoate monohydrate (glucocorticoid) 50 mcg. It works as an anti-inflammatory by blocking the release of these substances that cause allergy symptoms. Allergy pills containing only an antihistamine, for example, block only histamine.[ii]

What happens when you have allergies?

Allergies occur when your immune system, which normally fights germs, reacts to a substance that does not bother most other people. The reaction is a false alarm. You could have allergic reactions to more than one substance. It’s possible that both your genetic makeup and your environment play a role in allergies. Typically, allergens that cause reactions include pollen, dust mites, mold spores, pet dander, food, insect stings, and medicines. Reactions may include runny nose, sneezing, itching, rashes, swelling or asthma. The reactions range from minor to severe. [iii] Nasonex relieves nasal congestion, runny nose, sneezing, and itchy nose due to hay fever or other upper respiratory allergies.

How often do I need to take Nasonex products?

Use one dose every 24 hours, based on age: adults and children 12 years of age and older: 2 sprays in each nostril once daily while sniffing gently; children 2 to 11 years of age: 1 spray in each nostril once daily while sniffing gently; children under 2 years of age: do not use. Children should use for the shortest amount of time necessary to achieve symptom relief. Talk to your child’s doctor if your child needs to use the spray for longer than two months a year.

Does this product have any scent or fragrance?

No. Nasonex 24HR Allergy is a scent-free mist.

What does a prescription to over-the-counter switch mean?

After a prescription medicine has been on the market long enough, the manufacturer is able to gather scientific information about its safety and effectiveness. If the medicine has proved to be safe and effective with many people, the manufacturer can apply to the federal Food and Drug Administration to allow the medicine to be marketed over the counter for use without a doctor’s prescription.

This gives consumers easier and less expensive access to medications for use as part of a self-care regimen. [iv]

Can I use an HSA or FSA to buy Nasonex?

Yes. Allergy medicine is eligible for reimbursement through Health Savings Accounts and Flexible Spending Accounts.

Do Nasonex products cause drowsiness?

No. Nasonex 24HR Allergy nose spray is non-drowsy. It relieves your allergy symptoms without making you sleepy.

What if my symptoms aren’t better after 1 week?

Stop use and ask a doctor if your symptoms do not get better within 7 days of starting use or you get new symptoms such as severe facial pain or thick nasal discharge. You may have something more than allergies, such as an infection.

How are Nasonex products different from antihistamine pills?

The active ingredient in non-drowsy Nasonex 24HR Allergy is mometasone furoate 50 mcg per spray. It inhibits the body’s production of several chemicals, including histamine, which are responsible for allergy symptoms. Antihistamines work by blocking histamine only. Some antihistamines can cause side effects including drowsiness. Nasonex does not cause drowsiness.

No. Do not share this bottle with anyone else as this may spread germs.

Won’t I waste product by priming?

No. There is enough medicine in the bottle to allow for priming sprays plus the number of sprays labeled on the bottle.

What if I miss a dose?

If you forget a dose, do not double the next dose.

Can I use Nasonex products if I’m pregnant or breastfeeding?

If pregnant or breast-feeding, ask a health professional before use.

What if little or nothing sprays out?

Pumped 10 times and still no mist? Spray nozzle may be clogged. A clean spray nozzle helps ensure a full dose. Clean it weekly, or if it’s clogged. Don’t try to unblock nozzle with pin or sharp object – that can damage it.
